Eastern Oregon Visitors Association (EOVA)
Host Name: Catie Boucher, Destination Stewardship Coordinator
Host Bio: I am a tourism professional with a background in wildlife science. During my undergrad at OSU, I was really excited by the connections between wildlife conservation, sustainability, and tourism. Now, I also enjoy exploring how tourism can be a tool for economic and community development. In my role with EOVA, I manage collaborative projects that often stretch across multiple rural communities. These projects are often focused on developing experiences or products that help visitors explore Eastern Oregon. For example, I am coordinating a project to create self-guided audio tours, which will allow visitors to connect with local history in an engaging way. In the tourism world, this sort of work is called ‘destination development’ or ‘destination stewardship’. As a regional organization that serves 11 rural counties, we are positioned uniquely to tune into efforts at the state level and at the community level. So a lot of my work is also connecting folks to each other and resources- which means lots of listening, meeting facilitation, and planning!

Whenever possible the day will include a discussion of Oregon’s tourism industry combined with a tour of an on-the-ground project. Our goal is to show the student how diverse the tourism industry is! Some examples include: (1) Attending the America’s Global Village event in Ontario and how EOVA highlighted the event and community in a recent marketing project. (2)Taking a self-guided audio tour of Echo’s historic downtown. Then, learning how EOVA developed the tour in collaboration with local partners and contractors. (3) Visiting the Umatilla River Trail, a paved multi-use path that will eventually be linked together with other, nearby multi-use paths.
